This is an Original, Hand made Gyotaku of two King Mackerel attacking a school of greenbacks. It was made with Iridescent and Metallic Acrylic ink on Black Thai Mulberry paper. The eyes were meticulously painted to match the real thing with watercolor paints. This is a one of one original.
The print was then flattened using traditional Urauchi methods and backed with an additional layer of Black Thai Mulberry paper.
I have not seen any other artists use iridescent paint in their gyotaku prints and think it looks amazing. The paint on the print will change and shine different colors of silver, blue, green, gold and purple as the fish does, depending on the angle you view it at. Photos do not do these prints justice. Only an original will change colors and cannot be reproduced by a printer.
Each Original is hand signed and marked with my Japanese Hanko (Name Stamp).
This king fish was caught while Fishing out of St. Petersburg, Florida by my friend. The Greenbacks were given to me by a local Fishing guide.
Gyotaku prints are a unique, artisanal form of documenting and remembering a prized catch that began in Japan in the mid-1800's. They are a wonderful physical representation of a cherished memory you had while catching or hunting these beautiful fish. Gyotaku prints make great talking points and are perfect starters for wild fish tales.
